Juventus vs Atletico Madrid LIVE: Stream, score, goals as Cristiano Ronaldo scores twice, Champions League result

Despite their recent success in the competition, Atletico Madrid are not often talked about as one of the favourites to win the Champions League. Cristiano Ronaldo has so often been the difference against Atleti, but in Madrid it was two Uruguayan centre halves who not only dealt with the five time Champions League winner, but also provided scoring touches of their own. The 2-0 victory at the Wanda Metropolitano could be a sign that Champions League glory may finally cease to elude Simeone’s side.

That will only serve to further frustrate Juventus. They too have lost two finals in the last five years, and the signing of Ronaldo was supposed to be the addition to push them over the line. After the 2-0 loss in Madrid, Juve are staring elimination in the white of its eyes.

Their top scorer produced a match winning performance in Turin last season, but Allegri’s side don’t necessarily need to rely on Ronaldo to perform a miracle. Paulo Dybala, Miralem Pjanic and Mario Mandzukic are all capable of making the difference in one way or another. Follow live coverage below.

Juventus vs Atletico Madrid LIVE key points

Good afternoon and welcome to our live coverage of Juventus vs Atletico Madrid and Manchester City vs Schalke in the Champions League.

Juventus go into this second leg looking to overturn a two goal deficit against arguably the best defence in Europe. Fortunately this guy looks to be in the mood for Atletico Madrid’s visit this evening…

Simeone’s side will be weary. Ronaldo has a habit of producing against Los Rojiblancos…

Games vs Atletico: 32

Atletico are in good form

Juve’s main man will have his work cut out this time round though. Atleti have been at their best recently…

Atletico Madrid’s last five games:

Wins: 5

Goals scored:8

Goals Conceded: 0

Who can Atleti rely on to nick a precious away goal?

Antoine Griezmann is the obvious threat, but new boy Alvaro Morata has had a new lease of life since returning to Spain. He’s scored three in his last three and gave Juve’s back line a torrid time when he came on off the bench in the first leg.

Man City vs Schalke

Manchester City team news

Manchester City attempt to become the third English team to progress into the Champions League quarter-finals as they host Schalke at home.

They came from behind in the first leg after Raheem Sterling’s 90th minute goal gave them a 3-2 victory in Germany.

A clinical display over Borussia Dortmund saw Tottenham cruise into the last eight and a history making comeback against PSG put Manchester United through as well.

Are Pep’s men up to the challenge as they continue their quest for a quadruple?

Despite having never won the Champions League Pep Guardiola’s side are one of the favourites to lift the trophy this season but the Manchester City manager isn’t letting that distract the players:

“We cannot deny how strong other teams are,” said Guardiola. “You have to dream, to point as high as possible and at the same time accept there are other teams thinking the same.

“All the clubs that are in the knockout stages want to win this title. It is difficult. This competition is judged that when you are out of the last 16 it is a big disaster. My perspective is completely different.

“People say it is easy. Imagine to get into the last eight teams in Europe? Of course we want to win it but the other teams also have this desire.

“People think that because Real Madrid are not there, this competition will be easy. Of course I thought they were the favourites but there still remains incredible clubs to beat.”

Does Cristiano Ronaldo still have what it takes to be Juve’s talisman?

Man City vs Schalke

The stats all look good for Man City:

On 27 previous occasions sides that have scored three or more goals away from home in the first leg of a Champions League knockout tie have all gone on to progress, including six after winning 3-2.

Manchester City have won each of their past three meetings with FC Schalke in European competition.

They have only lost one of their 10 previous home meetings with German opponents in all European competitions, winning 7 and drawing 2.

They went down 3-1 in the 2013-14 Champions League group stages against Bayern Munich.

It’s been the round of comebacks in the Champions League. Manchester United scoring three against PSG and Ajax four against Real Madrid.

Can Schalke and Juventus draw on that magic to give us another wonderful night in Europe?

Only five minutes until kick off, the teams are on their way out to the pitch.

Here we go, the Uefa Champions League is next!

Man City 0 – 0 Schalke (3-2 agg)

Juve 0 – 0 Atletico (0-2 agg)

Zinchenko pushes forward on the left wing before sliding the ball inside to David Silva, Silva tries to slip Aguero in behind the defence but Serdar makes a crucial interception.

City win a corner that Gundogan plays short, Schalke defend well though and break quickly with Embolo on the counter attack. Embolo puts the ball into the box from the right wing but no-one gets on the end of the cross and the ball goes out of play.

6 mins: Man City 0 – 0 Schalke

The Schalke fans are buzzing in the crowd, they’re having a great time, chanting and cheering but Man City have a free kick to the left of Schalke’s area near the touchline.

David Silva whips it in and Danilo tries to flick it on, the ball almost falls for Sane but Schalke recover to boot it away.

Match preview.

What time does it start?

Juventus vs Atletico Madrid kicks off at 20:00 GMT on Tuesday 12th March

Where can I watch it?

Juventus vs Atletico Madrid will be shown live on BT Sport 3.

Player to watch:

He’s had a fresh breath of confidence since leaving Chelsea, and Alvaro Morata was a handful in the first leg having had a headed goal dubiously disallowed before setting up Gimenez’ strike from the corner. He also scored a brace against Real Sociedad at the beginning of the month, proving a useful option with Diego Costa struggling for form. Could he be the man to grab a crucial away goal and set Juve a near impossible mountain to climb?

Ballon d’Or: Luka Modric ends dominance of Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo

Luka Modric won a third successive Champions League and reached the World Cup final with Croatia in 2018

Real Madrid and Croatia midfielder Luka Modric won the 2018 Ballon d’Or, becoming the first player other than Lionel Messi or Cristiano Ronaldo to claim the award in more than a decade.

Modric, 33, won his third successive Champions League in May before helping Croatia to a first World Cup final.

Former Brazil and AC Milan forward Kaka, in 2007, was the last player other than Messi or Ronaldo to win it.

Ronaldo, who joined Juventus from Real Madrid in the summer, came second.

Barcelona forward Messi finished fifth, with Atletico Madrid frontman Antoine Griezmann and PSG attacker Kylian Mbappe – both of whom won the World Cup with France – third and fourth respectively.

Victory caps a stellar year for Modric, who also was named the world’s top male player at the Best Fifa Football Awards and received the Golden Ball award for the best player at the World Cup.

Speaking to BBC Sport, Modric dedicated the award to all of the other players who have missed out in the 10 years dominated by Messi and Ronaldo.

“Maybe in the past there are some players who could have won the Ballon d’Or like Xavi, Andres Iniesta or [Wesley] Sneijder but people finally now are looking at someone else,” he said.

Modric’s ‘magnificent’ strike doubles Croatia’s lead

“This award is for all the players who probably deserved to win it and didn’t. It was a really special year for me.

“It is difficult to express my emotion and how I feel in words. It is something unique for me. It was very special.”

Modric described Ronaldo and Messi as “phenomenal players”, adding: “To win means I did something really special on the pitch this year, that’s why 2017-18 was the year for me.”

Modric was one of eight Real Madrid players in the top 30, including Wales international Gareth Bale in 17th.

Lyon and Norway striker Ada Hegerberg, 23, won the inaugural Women’s Ballon d’Or while Mbappe, 19, became the first winner of the Kopa Trophy – awarded to the best under-21 player and selected by former Ballon d’Or winners.

The top 10

1. Luka Modric (Real Madrid and Croatia)

2. Cristiano Ronaldo (Juventus and Portugal)

3. Antoine Griezmann (Atletico Madrid and France)

4. Kylian Mbappe (Paris St-Germain and France)

5. Lionel Messi (Barcelona and Argentina)

6. Mohamed Salah (Liverpool and Egypt)

7. Raphael Varane (Real Madrid and France)

8. Eden Hazard (Chelsea and Belgium)

9. Kevin de Bruyne (Manchester City and Belgium)

10. Harry Kane (Tottenham and England)

How did Premier League players do?

Liverpool forward Mohamed Salah, who set a record for the most goals in a 38-game English top-flight campaign last season, was the highest-placed Premier League player in sixth.

Chelsea forward Eden Hazard was eighth, followed by Belgium team-mate Kevin de Bruyne, of Manchester City, in ninth.

Tottenham striker Harry Kane, who captained England to the World Cup semi-finals and won the Golden Boot, finished 10th as the only Englishman on the shortlist.

Chelsea and France midfielder N’Golo Kante was 11th, with World Cup-winning team-mate Paul Pogba, of Manchester United, finishing 15th.

Sergio Aguero, a Premier League winner with Manchester City last season, was 16th, while Liverpool’s Champions League finalists Roberto Firmino and Sadio Mane were 19th and 22nd respectively.

Brazil goalkeeper Alisson, who joined Liverpool from Roma in the summer, was 25th, with Tottenham and France captain Hugo Lloris 29th.

What is the Ballon d’Or?

The Ballon d’Or has been awarded by France Football every year since 1956, with England’s Stanley Matthews the first winner.

It was only for European players until 1995, when it expanded to become open for any player at a European club. From 2007 it opened up to the rest of the world.

The 30-man list of nominees is compiled by the editorial staff of the French magazine, with the winner voted for by journalists from around the world, with one representative per nation.

From 2010 to 2015 it merged with Fifa’s awards, but they split and the world governing body set up its own awards again in 2016.

Ronaldo statue: Sculptor Emanuel Santos takes another shot at bust

Ronaldo said he was “honoured” following the unveiling of the original bust last year

The sculptor behind a bronze bust of footballer Cristiano Ronaldo that was ridiculed on social media when it was unveiled last year has created another.

Emanuel Santos’s original statue sparked a wave of memes questioning its resemblance to the player after it was placed on display at Madeira airport.

One year on, Mr Santos aims to silence critics with a new piece commissioned by the website Bleacher Report.

Defending his work, he said: “I’m not what the media made me look like.”

In an emotional interview, Mr Santos told Bleacher Report that mockery of his initial work upset his family and made him feel “isolated”.

“I didn’t feel like speaking to anyone,” he said, adding: “Managing all of that was very hard.”

After being challenged to create a more traditional interpretation, Mr Santos said his plan was to produce a bust of the Portugal footballer displaying a “more serious” expression.

He admitted being “nervous” about possible criticism of his new piece, but said it was important not to let that prevent him from completing it.

“I want my son to understand that if he enjoys doing something very much, [he] doesn’t let himself be defeated with negative criticism,” he said.

While criticism of Mr Santos’s first sculpture was difficult for the 41-year-old to accept, it also received praise, not least from Ronaldo himself, and Mr Santos continues to defend his work.

“I liked the result [of the first bust] and was really proud of it. And if I had to do it again, I would make everything exactly the same,” Mr Santos said, adding that he had “laughed out of happiness and satisfaction” when it was completed.

Mr Santos said he was a huge fan of the Real Madrid striker, and that he had a connection with the player.

The amateur sculptor said at the time of the unveiling of the original statue that it was “not as simple as it seems” to create and that the work was “a matter of taste”.

“It is impossible to please the Greeks and Trojans. Neither did Jesus please everyone,” Mr Santos said.

The original work, which took Mr Santos 15 days to complete, will remain on permanent display outside the terminal entrance.

Biography Cristiano Ronaldo |  Biography Online

Cristiano Ronaldo is a Portuguese professional footballer who has played for Manchester United, Real Madrid and Portugal. Along with Lionel Messi, he is regularly considered to be one of the top two players in the world. He became the world’s most expensive player when Real Madrid signed him for 94 million Euros in 2009 from Manchester United. His sustained performance has enabled him to break numerous records for goal scoring and has been named FIFA player of the year (Ballon d’Or) five times. He has become an iconic figure in the sport.

“Fans jeer me because I’m good-looking, rich and a great player.”

Short Biography Cristiano Ronaldo

Cristiano Ronaldo dos Santos Aveiro was born in Portugal 5 February 1985. ronaldo

His second name ‘Ronaldo’ was named after his father’s favourite American actor – Ronald Reagan.

From an early age, he loved playing football. His talent, enthusiasm and love for the game soon became apparent. By the age of ten, his talent was becoming well known in Portugal and he was signed for Nacional, a Portuguese side from Madeira. He later signed for Sporting Lisbon – one of the biggest clubs in Portugal.

His first international exposure came when representing Portugal under 17s at the UEFA championships. His performance caused him to be marked by leading European football managers. In 2003, he played against Manchester United when Sporting beat them 3-1 in a friendly.

After the departure of David Beckham, Sir Alex Ferguson decided to buy the youngster for a fee of £12.24 million. He started playing for Manchester in the 2003/04 season. Despite initially asking for the number 28 shirt, Ferguson insisted that he wear the famous number 7 shirt.

At Manchester United, his career steadily progressed. In the 2006/07 season, Ronaldo was a key figure in Manchester’s successful league campaign. Ronaldo scored over 20 goals, as he won his first championship. In March 2007, his prowess helped him to gain a record-breaking £120,000 a week five-year contract. He also won PFA player of the year award.

The 2007-08 season was even better, with Cristiano Ronaldo being named the player of the tournament, as Manchester United won the coveted Champions League trophy. The most prestigious club competition in the world. Sir Alex Ferguson said of Ronaldo:

“We’ve had some great players at this club in my 20 years, but he’s up with the best.”

However, despite the success, Ronaldo expressed a desire to leave the club, and move to Real Madrid. In 2009, Manchester United accepted an offer of £80 million from Real Madrid, making Ronaldo the most expensive player in the world.

Despite intense pressure, Ronaldo thrived in the atmosphere at Real Madrid reaching 100 La Liga goals in just three seasons at Real Madrid. He has gone on to become Real Madrid’s top goal scorer of all time. At times, Real Madrid have been overshadowed by their more successful rivals at Barcelona, who won more titles and competitions. With Ronaldo, Real Madrid have won the La Liga just twice – 2011–12, 2016–17. However, he has guided Real Madrid to three UEFA Champions League: 2013–14, 2015–16, 2016–17.

His prolific goal scoring record has lead to frequent comparison with Barcelona’s exceptional Lionel Messi. Sometimes, Ronaldo played up the rivalry, but at other times played it down.

Ronaldo represented Portugal at The World Cup in 2006 and 2010 and the Euros 2004, 2008, 2012. Despite being a marked man, he helped Portugal to a consistently good performance. He is already Portugal’s third most capped player.

Ronaldo’s style of play creates both widespread admirations, and also criticism. He has the capacity to dribble and beat players, like few apart from Messi do. He is sometimes accused of being petulant (not helped in England because of his altercation with David Beckham, where he winked after getting Beckham sent off in the 2010 world cup.)

Outside of football, he is often photographed with his model girlfriends and in his many sports car. Perhaps unfairly, he is characterised as the ultimate ‘playboy’ footballer, with his styled hair, and expensive clothes. In 2009, he was involved in a crash whilst driving his Ferrari. However, after reacting to newspaper claims he was involved in drinking in England, he replied,

“I don’t smoke or drink, and I’m not a big spender. I live in a rural part of Cheshire and my nearest neighbours are squirrels, birds and cows. Much of my time is spent at home with friends and family. I enjoy being peaceful and often sit by the candlelight to relax. Tranquillity is important to me.”

However, Ronaldo has a strong work ethic, and has been able to maintain a consistently high standard of play for several seasons:

“I am not a perfectionist, but I like to feel that things are done well. More important than that, I feel an endless need to learn, to improve, to evolve, not only to please the coach and the fans, but also to feel satisfied with myself. It is my conviction that there are no limits to learning, and that it can never stop, no matter what our age.”

– Cristiano Ronaldo.

The legendary George Best said of Ronaldo:

“There have been a few players described as the new George Best over the years, but this is the first time it’s been a compliment to me.”

Cristiano Ronaldo was a key member of the Real Madrid side winning the UEFA Champions League 2013–14. In 2013-14, Ronaldo was top scorer in the UEFA Champions League for the second year running. The 2014 World Cup was a disappointment with Portugal going out in the group stages. However, Ronaldo was the first Portuguese player to play and score in three World Cup tournaments

Cristiano Ronaldo ‘to be served rape summons to face accusations after lawyers track down his address in Italy’

CRISTIANO Ronaldo is due to be served a summons to face rape claims after lawyers for his accuser finally tracked down his address in Italy, it was reported tonight.

The Juventus striker vehemently denies claims he attacked ex-model Kathryn Mayorga at a Las Vegas hotel ten years ago.

Ronaldo, 34, emphatically denies claims he raped the former model

Lawyers for Ms Mayorga, 35, began hunting for the football superstar’s Italian address in October when US police reopened the case.

Ronaldo’s legal team have been trying to get the case dismissed – and court papers say they have declined to help locate his house.

But now, the 34-year-old’s home address in Turin has finally been located after a trawl through property records held by Italy’s Central Authority, The Mirror reported.

Attorneys representing former teacher Ms Mayorga are apparently expected to send the court summons document in the coming weeks once it’s translated.

A spokesperson for Ronaldo declined to comment last night – but insisted that claims he would be issued with a summons were “entirely false.”

The former model came forward with her explosive claims last year, prompting police in the US to reopen the case

It comes after a US judge last month allowed more time to track down the Portugal national captain’s address – a necessary step in beginning court proceedings.

Ms Mayorga met Ronaldo – then a 24-year-old Manchester United ace – at nightclub in Las Vegas in 2009.

Footage showed them dancing in the VIP area of Rain nightclub – inside the glamorous Palms Casino Resort – where then 25-year-old Ms Mayorga worked.

She claims the the £100million star then raped her in his luxury suite before paying her £295,000 in “hush money” – which she accepted because she “felt intimidated.”

But police reopened their investigation last year after she came forward with the identity of her alleged attacker.

Ronaldo emphatically denies the explosive claims.

At the time they emerged, the footballer Tweeted: “I firmly deny the accusations being issued against me.

“Rape is an abominable crime that goes against everything that I am and believe in.

“Keen as I may be to clear my name, I refuse to feed the media spectacle created by people seeking to promote themselves at my expense.”

He followed that tweet with a further message saying he had a completely “clear conscience.”

Cristiano Ronaldo Crashes Monaco Grand Prix, Hangs with Lewis Hamilton

Crashes Monaco Grand Prix

… Hangs with Lewis Hamilton

Breaking News

There’s A LOT of money in this photo …

Soccer superstar Cristiano Ronaldo traded the pitch for the pit on Thursday … rolling over to the Monaco Grand Prix to hang with Lewis Hamilton.

Hamilton had just wrapped up his opening practice session for the race — he turned in the fastest practice time — when he went back to the Team Mercedes-Benz garage to chat up CR7.

Of course, Ronaldo got the ultimate VIP treatment — getting a full tour of the track and pit lane with his son by his side the entire time. CR7’s girlfriend, Georgina Rodriguez, was also on hand in Monaco, just two days after slaying at the Cannes Film Festival.

It was interesting to see Hamilton — considering he’d backed out of media obligations on Wednesday in the wake of the death of Formula 1 legend Niki Lauda.

FYI, Hamilton is the highest earning F1 driver of all time — with a reported $489 MILLION in career race earnings!!

Ronaldo’s got bank too — he reportedly made more than $108 MILLION in 2018 … and continues to chart as one of the most bankable celebrities on the planet.

By the way, the Monaco Grand Prix goes down on Sunday — and shocker, Hamilton is expected to win.

Juventus 1 – 1 Torino

Cristiano Ronaldo scored but was left frustrated as Juventus were held to a draw

Torino’s wait for an away victory at derby rivals Juventus goes on after Cristiano Ronaldo’s late header rescued a 1-1 draw.

It looked like Sasa Lukic’s 18th-minute strike would see Torino break their duck, having not managed to defeat the Bianconeri on their own turf since a 2-1 success at the old Stadio delle Alpi in 1995.

However, Ronaldo powered home a header with six minutes remaining to deny them and earn Juventus a point.

The point kept Torino in sixth place in the table and means they are still in the hunt for a Champions League place, being two points behind fourth-placed Atalanta.

Torino survived an early penalty scare when Ronaldo chased down a long ball forward and seemed to get there just ahead of Salvatore Sirigu. However, the referee correctly decided that the goalkeeper had got hands on the ball.

At the other end, Wojciech Szczesny made a block by his near post to deny Alex Berenguer but there was little he could do shortly afterwards to prevent Torino from taking the lead.

A horrendous error by Miralem Pjanic in midfield gifted the ball to Lukic and he kept his composure as he approached Szczesny’s goal before sliding the ball confidently past the goalkeeper and into the bottom corner of the net.

Sasa Lukic's early goal looked to have been enough for Torino to cause a shock

The goal seemed to spring the champions into life and they were almost level immediately but Sirigu parried away Blaise Matuidi’s volley.

An errant effort from Ronaldo left the Portuguese visibly irritated and putting a second shot from long range into the stands did little to improve his mood.

Ronaldo eventually found his range just before half-time but Sirigu easily smothered the strike.

Ronaldo threatened again at the start of the second half when he glanced a header just wide from Pjanic’s corner.

A weaving run from Leonardo Spinazzola took him past three Torino defenders but his shot skidded wide.

It looked like Torino had survived a difficult period either side of the break and they almost doubled their lead after 76 minutes when a rare attack saw Lukic flash a dangerous ball across the six-yard box and Andrea Belotti was inched away from touching the ball in as his slid in.

However, with six minutes remaining, Ronaldo got between two defenders and powered a trademark header past Sirigu from the edge of the six-yard box, perfectly meeting Spinazzola’s cross from the left.
